Lump Chalk for Building/Cattle yards

Needham Chalks can supply lump chalk from any of its 5 quarried around East Anglia for the purpose of building and yard construction.

Chalk is the ideal base for livestock due to it being able to absorb urine from animals. Compared with concrete, a chalk floor allows urine to soak in, keeping straw or other bedding drier, resulting in a  more aerobic state, and hence producing less ammonia.

It is also found to be at the fraction of the price compared to the modern day concrete.

Chalk Floor quantities

New Shed floor

For a new Chalk floor it is best to apply chalk at a thickness of 8″. If you compact this with a roller/tracked digger or wacker plate, you shall then get a 6″ floor thickness. When working out the required amount of chalk at this thickness you would need to apply 1 Tonne of lump chalk per cubic meter  of floor area.

Existing flooring

When applying lump chalk to an existing chalk floor then it is recommended on topping up any holes you may have or low stops. On annual mucking out of sheds inspection should be carried out to ensure that there are no areas becoming lower than the required level. If so it is advised to top up these areas and again compound them down with either a roller, digger track or wacker plate.

Chalk flooring can also be used for outside muck pads however these need to be layed in the dry to obtain the best results.

Lump chalk flooring can also be washed down using a rotary brush for best results or with a carful pressure washer once they have compacted and created a sealed top.
